10 things to do in the first 20 minutes of waking up

We see a lot of ideals on social media about being productive, getting a good start to your morning, etc. In reality, this can actually be really challenging. It’s important to think about what is helpful and attainable for YOU, instead of feeling sad that you laid in bed for hours on your phone this morning.  If you are interested in bettering your morning routine to be more productive, I wrote this post to help not just all of you, but me too! Mornings are the start to the day, and I dream of them being perfect and productive.  In this post I am sharing a few ways you can start to make your morning more of what you want it to be, instead of lazing around in bed.

Most mornings I like to get up a reasonable hour, somewhere between 8 and 9. I have realized that if I get completely ready for my day as soon as I open my eyes, I will feel far more productive, and less inclined to crawl back in bed.

Last week I wrote a blog post about developing girl boss habits (read here), and you might recognize some of these tasks from that list. These are ways to wake up a little easier, and feel more refreshed and like a girl boss.

I recommend standing/sitting up right when you open your eyes, and embarking on these tasks in order, in the first 20 minutes of waking up.

TIP: Leave your phone on your bedside table until you have checked everything off of this list. It just feels so good to be completely ready right when you wake up, instead of slugging around all morning (because we all know our phones can be distracting).

Managing your time to be able to work on your goals is so important, and getting ready in the first 20 minutes of your day can really help. I also included some ideas for continuing the productivity into the next 20 minutes of your morning.

Now, obviously 20 minutes is a very short amount of time. You might not be able to squeeze all of these tasks into 20 minutes, especially if you move slow in the morning. It’s more about the idea of waking up immediately and getting ready quickly so you are ready to embark on your day! So, don’t sweat it if it’s going to take you a little longer than 20 minutes to complete my checklists. As long as you are in the right mindset, you will have an amazing morning and day.

10 things to do in the first 20 minutes of waking up (10 minutes if you are feeling really good)

  • Take a deep breath
  • Stretch
  • Drink some water
  • Open your curtains
  • Turn on music – peaceful morning, or a bop to wake you up
  • Make your bed
  • Wash your face – do your morning skincare routine
  • Get dressed
  • Repeat three positive affirmations – you can look this up on Pinterest
  • Think about goals/tasks/events for the day

*if you typically shower in the morning, include that in your first ten minutes checklist

Keep it going: the next 20 minutes

  • Make some coffee or tea
  • Make a to do list for the day
  • Start making breakfast
  • Do 15 minutes of yoga – if this is something you like to include in your day
  • Check your social media – some people say not to do this in the morning, but I like to start my day by seeing what my other blogger babes are up to. As long as social media inspires and empowers you and doesn’t make you feel bad about yourself, I would include this in your morning routine.
  • Fill up a glass of water or a water bottle – add ice, lemon, fruit, or nothing.
  • Start doing your makeup – if you do makeup

And those are all my morning routine ideas, to get your day started off productive! If you are interested in some more habit ideas, or some habits I aim to develop this Spring, check out this post.

Mornings don’t always have to be productive. I have plenty of lazy days, but sometimes you crave that productive and energized feeling. Maybe you are looking to become more of a morning person. Give these ideas a try, but in the end, it comes down to what works for you and your morning! It can be really tough to do all of these tasks in 20 minutes! Also, if you are a person that struggles to wake up earlier, go ahead and sleep in, and then do this checklist. That way you can spend as much time as you need getting your beauty sleep, and then you can get ready super fast so you don’t waste anytime! Getting ready the moment you wake up is a total time saver and it really throws you right into your day —- give it a shot!

Empowerment and productivity is so important, and I hope I can inspire you all with my posts, but in the end I want to be transparent. Productivity isn’t a 24/7 situation. Everyone is lazy! However, mornings are the start to your day, so it might be a good idea to be mindful of what you include in your morning routine!

I hope you all enjoyed reading this post! I am going to end it with these two morning quotes:

“Each morning we are born again, what we do today is what matters most” – Buddha

“set a goal that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning”- unknown

  1. L O V E D this blog post Raquel! I am so motivated and can’t wait to try lots of this out tomorrow morning! Loved the pics too – great as always! xx

    1. Thanks for your constant support! I am so glad you loved the post, and you will always be one of my top motivation sources when it comes to blogging 🙂

  2. I discovered how productive my weekday mornings can be when I shower at night and get the right amount of sleep so I wake up before my alarm. I can still lay around in bed being lazy for an hour and I won’t be running late!

    XO Steph

  3. Thanks for these. I’ve been trying various ways to motivate me to wake up earlier (I have two little ones). But I like the idea of doing your check list before checking your phone! On the days I do end up waking up instead of snoozing I’m just mindlessly scrolling!
    Great post! 🙂

    1. Totally! It’s really hard to remember, which is why I try and take a few sips right when I wake up. Thanks for leaving a comment!
